December 2012

Vanessa is hosting our playgroup next Thursday, the 6th! This means the kiddos get to play in her fully enclosed backyard, while the moms chat, and chase, and play too. We will have many of the same activities to offer, like an edible craft, and art.

The following week is our Christmas MOPS meeting.  Linda Wiltsey will share her testimony and lots of great holiday traditions, ideas and samples to keep the holidays simple and fun. She will be demonstrating her famous Baklava recipe and everyone will come home with a fancy carmel apple (an excellent gift idea for teachers, coaches, neighbors…)  Everyone will make one apple for free, but if you would like to make more than one for extra gifts, we will be providing extra apples and supplies for $3.00 per apple.

On the 20th we will have a Christmas party at the Churchill home in San Dimas then visit some friends at assisted living homes. A great way to show our kids the joy of sharing God's love!

Sawdust Factory

Thursday, November 15th at 10am.

We will be making wood projects such as picture frames, yard signs, wreaths, Christmas ornaments etc. Some of the projects require your child's hand print. Children are welcome to come and we can trace their hand print there. If you prefer to come alone and you want to create something with your child's hand print, simply trace their prints at home on a plane sheet of white paper and bring it with you.

We will have an hour and a half to create and we will leave with a finished project

And don't worry if you're not crafty, the staff will help you make a beautiful creation. These projects are great for seasonal decorations and/gifts for the holidays.

$9-26 per project. You can go online and see some examples of the types of projects available.

We hope to see you there!

Please RSVP by November 10th to Kimberlee Mendoza (714) 269-4070.

What is MOPS?

By Vanessa Gallego

MOPS is a community of moms that recognize the unique joys, needs and challenges of mothering, and whose purpose is to remind moms that they are not alone!

Here at Cornerstone, our MOPS leadership team has been led by the desire to create a moment in our busy lives to pause, reflect, regroup, connect and encourage one another.  With the long list of daily to do’s it is so easy to put ourselves at the bottom.  But when we take time to fill up, we will have more to give to the people that matter most.

Our MOPS group meets once a month on the 2nd Thursdays from 9:30-11:30am in the Cornerstone Sanctuary. Our group is for moms with kids of all ages and stages and you are welcome to come no matter what age your kids are.  We offer childcare for 0-5 years.

So come!  be encouraged, get inspired, make connections and celebrate this journey of motherhood together!

Here is a sneak peak of our upcoming meetings:

November 8th    Carolyn Carney speaks about “A Table Prepared” our craft is a personalized trivet

December 13th   Linda Wiltsey shares her testimony and lots of great holiday traditions, ideas and samples to keep the holidays simple and fun.

January 10th        Laura Tapia will be speaking about “ Organization from the inside out” and we will be making a photo/message board or a clip organizer for that pile of bows.  You will be asked to bring ½ yard of a fabric of your choice and some ribbon for this project.

February 14th     Is all about LOVE! Our speaker, Jane Delahook is speaking about romance in marriage and our craft is a beautiful paper cone to be filled with flowers, delectable treats, or anything else to delight the loves in your life.

Costumes, Anyone? 2 Fun Events!

Mommy Meet Up will be at the Glendora Village "Parade" next Wednesday morning. This is where you get to dress the kids up in their favorite costumes and walk from store to store in downtown, collecting candy and having a grand time. The parade goes from 10-2. If you would like to walk with us, we will meet at the City Hall steps at 10:30 (next to the huge pine tree that still has Christmas lights on it) on the South/East corner of Foothill & Glendora. Pack a lunch too and join us afterward at Finkbiner Park.  Click here for general info on the Halloween Walk.

Then on Halloween night we will play at Cornerstone's Annual Pumpkin Patch. This is a free event full of carnival games, candy, costumes, and a much celebrated cake walk. It goes from 6-8:30 and is open to the whole community.

So there you have it. Two fun & safe events for you and your kiddos. As for me, I am looking forward to "helping" my kids with their stash of candy next week. hmmm I'm thinking a twix or two should do the trick!

** We will NOT meet Thursday, November 1st for our usual playgroup as we will all need to recover from our overdose of sugar**

Planning & Peaches

Last Tuesday some of the MMU steering team met for prayer and planning. This group of young moms is eager to serve you this year. I am excited for the MOPS vision that Vanessa has shared with us! The MOPS program will start at Cornerstone on Thursday, October 11th. We already have some great speakers lined up & simple crafts for the moms to do. There will be tables with casual discussion and room for praying together and lots of laughter. Please consider bringing a friend. It is our prayer that this will be a real place of community as we plunge into relationship! We will post more MOPS details in a couple weeks...

The other thing we did at the meeting was devour Kimberlee's peach cobbler (shown alongside a cute cup of coffee). It was one of the best peach cobblers I've had! Kimberlee was happy to share her recipe with us. I plan to get out there and buy all the end-of-season peaches I can find to make this.

Easy Peach Cobbler

Ingredients:
8 large (or 12 small) peaches, pitted & sliced
zest of 1 lemon
juice of 1 1/2 lemons
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
1 (18.25 oz) package yellow cake mix
12 oz. softened cream cheese
1/2 cup melted butter

Directions:

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2) In a large bowl, combine peach slices, lemon zest, lemon juice, and sugar. Stir and allow peaches to sit a few minutes to macerate. Stir in cinnamon if using

3) In a separate bowl, with a fork or pastry cutter, cut the softened cream cheese into the cake mix until it is worked in well and clumps together

4) Butter or spray a 13'' x 9" casserole dish. Spread peaches into the dish. Cover with the cake mix & cream cheese. Drizzle melted butter over the top.

5) Bake in preheated oven 45-50 minutes, until golden brown. Serve with sweetened whipped cream, coffee, and friends

End of Summer Water Play

Hardly anything says summer fun like a huge inflatable water slide. Am I right? Well, mamas, this Thursday is your lucky day. On August 9th we are capping off our Mommy Meet Up Summer Fun with a water play day. Meet us at 10am at Michele Rivard's home (726 Scottdale Ave Glendora). There will be a few different water activities for kids of all ages, so invite a friend or two. Please bring a $10/per family donation for the water activities and lunch. Bring swimsuits & your own towels too! See you there! Leave a comment or send an email with any questions or if you need a ride.

Summer Bouncing Fun

Summer is in full swing! We hope you are enjoying this warm weather, or at least have a cool place to hide out if you're not a summer person. This month we are venturing out to Pump It Up in Rancho. Apparently just as entertaining for our kids as a trip to the park, but with the bonus of air conditioning! Their pop-in playtime is for kids ages 10 and under. We will meet there on Tuesday July 17th at 10am. Cost is $7 per child; moms and kids under 2 (with a paid sibling) are free. We might even grab a little lunch while were out there so bring some extra cash if you'd like! Their address is 11966 Jack Benny Drive Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
Remember to bring your socks!!
